Community changed everything for Jette

Surrounded by greenery, old trees and sparkling water surfaces, Viggohaven is a peaceful pocket between city life and nature. This is where 81-year-old Jette Spangsby lives. She has found a home that - in her own words - has changed everything. She moved here just two years ago after a serious illness turned her world upside down. Today, she sits in her bright living room, smiling and full of energy - something neither she nor the doctors could have imagined.
A new chapter began in Holbæk
Jette has spent a large part of her life on Bornholm, first with her then husband - and after the divorce she lived alone in her house in Rønne for 25 years. A few years ago, she became seriously ill with cancer and underwent major surgery. Despite the procedure, she couldn't fully recover, and doctors estimated that she didn't have much time left. Returning to the house was not an option, and her daughters stepped in and helped her find a new home in Holbæk, close to her family.
It was with her daughters that Jette visited Viggohaven for the first time, and as soon as she stepped into the atrium garden, she knew she had found her new home: "It was a beautiful sight with architectural details and wood everywhere. I could immediately see myself living here," she says with a smile.
Community was the turning point
Two years ago, Jette moved into Viggohaven, and her new home quickly proved to be a turning point in her life. In Viggohaven , she found a community that she says has had a direct impact on her health and joy of life.
"I've made some close friends here who make me happy. We go to the movies together and go to a restaurant afterwards where we talk about the movie we've seen. And we have a literature group where we meet and discuss the books we've read. It's one of my favorite things," says Jette.
In addition to the friendships at Viggohaven , the move has also brought her closer to her two daughters and five grown-up grandchildren, who often drop by. "They've been a huge help, especially in the beginning. Just being able to see them several times a week means a lot," she says.
Jette is convinced that the close relationships, the many activities and the daily joy are the reason why she is still doing well - despite the doctors' harsh prognosis. "I completely forget that I'm sick when I'm with the others," she smiles.
Jette's beliefs are backed by research from Harvard and the Danish Cancer Society, among others, showing that strong social communities can improve quality of life - and in some cases even prolong life - even with serious illness.
Always something to look forward to
When Jette talks about the future, it's always with a smile. Because at Viggohaven , there's always something to look forward to - for example, the annual summer party. Here the residents gather for good food cooked by a group of residents, laughter and songs from their youth.
It's events like this that energize me. This year's summer party was fantastic - full of laughter, good conversations and memories to last a lifetime," she says.
The summer party is far from the only highlight. There are also bike rides, sing-alongs in the atrium garden and the annual revue, where the residents themselves provide the entertainment. "There's always something to look forward to - it's one of the best things about living here," she adds.
