Jan is ready for a new capital
Last Friday was Jan Würtz's last day at the City of Copenhagen, where he has been employed for 43 years. He celebrated with a farewell reception for both former and current colleagues, his family with children, children-in-law and grandchildren, and we were lucky enough that a few of us from Agora Gardens were also invited.
Homemade wreath cake and all kinds of sweets were served on the coffee table and instead of a farewell speech, Jan had written a song. "It's less solemn", he says. "It's also easier to sing than give a speech when you know you're going to be moved". In general, Jan enjoys writing party songs and is looking forward to having more time for it when he starts his new life in Bodilhaven after New Year.
"It was a somewhat ambivalent experience to have the last working day in Njalsgården", says Jan. "Because while I was a little sad to say goodbye to all my great colleagues, I was also looking forward to the new life I'm starting here on January 2nd. So now that it's starting to sink in, I can see that it was the perfect end to a long working life. Now I can really focus on the exciting senior life that I think awaits me in Bodilhaven."
On Monday, January 2, Jan starts a whole new chapter in his life when he moves into his new 2-room apartment in Bodilhaven. Just as the office has been packed up, Jan's current apartment in Amager has also been cleaned up and thrown out.
And when he leaves the address in the rented van with his son and son-in-law behind the wheel, only nine moving boxes and the most important furniture are included.
Jan is happy to tell everyone about his decision to move into Bodilhaven and doesn't understand why many more people don't choose to do what he did. "I know so many people who are afraid of being lonely when their working life ends. Yet they don't dare to take the plunge and try a different type of living", he says. "But what's the worst that can happen? If it's not a success, I can just move back again".We look forward to welcoming Jan to Bodilhaven in January and to being part of the next chapter of his life, along with his many new neighbors.
