Read about Finn's fresh start
A fresh start - with room for memories
It was at the end of February that Finn put the keys in the door of his new home for the first time. And although his home in Sophushaven is radically different from the detached house he used to share with his ex-wife, he hasn't regretted it for a second.
Today, Finn has settled in well. Both in his private home and in the good neighborhood, where he is one of the active residents you often meet at social events.
We visited Finn in his home to talk about redecorating. About creating a stylish and personal base in the middle of a community and about taking a bold leap into the community.
It's not hard to feel comfortable at Finn. You can already feel it when you bend down in the bright hallway, untie your laces and kick off your sneakers at the heels.
Finn has good taste and has managed to decorate in a light, modern and cozy way.
In his connected kitchen and living room, you're greeted by a stylish laid-back atmosphere with warm, tropical colors and a touch of fresh pink from a large pot of lilies by the window.
From the pictures on the wall, two familiar eyes peer out from under a distinctive red straw hair. At first glance, you might recognize Tintin, but if you look closely, you'll see that he's in extremely good company here in Finn's living room.
"I've always loved Ole Ahlberg's Tintin pictures. I saw them for the first time many years ago and thought they were beautiful and flabby. When I was decorating here in Sophushaven, I thought: This is it."
And you can see that Finn has chosen his furniture and art with care. Everything fits perfectly in his new home.
"I know that many people find it difficult to scale down and get rid of things that have accumulated over a lifetime. And that's completely understandable," Finn explains.
"But when you move to something so different, I think you have to be careful not to take too many old things with you. They belonged somewhere else, and you have to move on too. You might get too attached to what was. Things are just things - and you'll be so happy afterwards."
For Finn, the process of carefully selecting his furniture and redecorating has been a good experience.
And if you look around his fine home and let your eyes run over the small details, you will still notice the African lady, the small polished wooden figurines, the classically curved candlesticks and other personal trinkets that have also found a home in the new home.
All fitting for a fresh start in a new home - with room for all the memories.
Headlong leap into good neighborliness
It's never been far from Finn to strike up a conversation. And if you spend just a few minutes with him, you can tell he's good company.
"I have always enjoyed being with people. Both privately and in my professional life. So it was natural for me to move into a place like this," says Finn with a warm smile. "It's been a huge pleasure to come here and meet the other residents."
It was Finn's daughter who first saw the pictures of the large, covered atrium garden and thought of her father. Together they drove to Sophushaven and by the end of the day, only one question remained.
"I had no doubts at all after seeing it - it was just a matter of deciding which home it would be. And that decision has been worth its weight in gold ever since"
It wasn't long before both Finn and Tintin were settled into their new apartment and a good base was created. For Finn, it gave him the energy to head out into the green communal garden and get closer to his new neighbors
"I remember one evening when Lone, who lives downstairs, was sitting outside in the garden eating. I went down to her and asked if she wanted some company," says Finn, pointing out the window towards the green surroundings. "Then I went up to get my own food and came back so we could sit and chat and eat together."
And it was a good decision. Lone and Finn had so much fun that their dinner became the basis for a whole new tradition in Sophushaven.
"The next day we grabbed Hans," Finn explains with a laugh. "And then we sat there again - now three people. Then we grabbed Rene and so on. Finally, I told them that we're going to sit down and eat every day until people come. And so they did. Slow and steady. It took a month to get the communal evening meals up and running, but more people joined in. And today we enjoy the fact that there's always someone to eat with if you want to."
However, the small dinner club was just the beginning. That's usually the way it is with enthusiasts.
Among other things, Finn is also behind a larger communal dining tradition where two food teams take turns cooking and serving monthly meals for their neighbors.
His latest dream for the community is a wine club that will soon be open to both connoisseurs and green wine enthusiasts. He and three other residents are already planning evenings of fun, learning, talking and great wine experiences.
Something tells us that the future holds many great experiences in Sophushaven. And as a visitor, you can easily become quite envious of those who can call Finn a neighbor.
